Smelly Jelly

These are great alternatives to spending a fortune on air fresheners.    You can put these in a variety of jars.  I like to use baby food jars, the small ones are just perfect.

RECIPE I

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Wash your containers then add water from a measuring cup up to the neck.  Make a note of the amount of water you use for each container.

  2. Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.

  3. If you are using oil based fragrance or essential oil, add one drop of fragrance-free dishwashing liquid per cup of water, then add one teaspoon of fragrance oil, or 10 to 12 drops of essential oil and stir well.  Add more scent, if desired, until the aroma is as strong as you would like it.  Water based scent can be added to the water without adding any dishwashing liquid.

  4. Add one teaspoon of crystals per cup of water, stir well, and wait about an hour for the crystal to fully absorb the water.  The gel should be fairly firm.

  5. At this time you can add items to the jelly like seashells or any other decorations you may want to add.  You could make a fishbowl with rubber fish and sea shells for example.  The options are endless.

  6. Cover the top of your jar with netting held in place with a rubber band.  Put the top on the jar and tie up with a ribbon with a little card attached.  Here are some of the sayings you could put on the card:

This jelly has been made for you
in a store it can't be found.
So remove the lid, replace the lace
and let the scent abound!

Or this one...

This isn't something you should eat,
It isn't related to your feet.
Though it's called "Smelly Jelly," the scent is sweet,
And will make any room in your home smell neat!

Suggestions:

Over time, the water and scent will evaporate a little. Simply add a little more water and a few more drops of your fragrance to refresh.

RECIPE II

This is a homemade recipe.

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, mix 1 cup water, essential oil and food colouring.  As soon as it starts to boil, remove from heat.

  2. Completely dissolve gelatin and salt in the hot water then add the other cup of water (cold).  Stir well, but gently so it doesn't foam.

  3. Pour into jars and set aside for a couple of days before using so the gelatin has a chance to completely set.  You can refrigerate to speed up the process.

  4. Once cooled, cover with lids that have a few holes punched in them to allow fragrance to escape or cover with mesh fabric held in place with rubber bands.
